Can you tell us why you wrote your book?

I wrote the book, because I wanted to be free from the chains that held me captive. I was being constrained by my mind that needed to be renewed, which caused physical problems.

Which part of the book was the hardest to write?

The first 18 years of my life was the hardest to write about. The foundation of my life was laid the first 18 years. The learned behavior was first formed in the early years of my life. My decision making came from the culture I grew up it.

Does your book have an underlying message that readers should know about?

Yes, don’t make decisions based on feelings. Base it on what is right or wrong, even if you don’t want too. Your feelings will betray you. Include God in every area of your life. Decisions are so very important, we make them all day long, even to get up in the morning is a decision. Make a conscious effort to consult God and use common sense in making decisions.

Would you like to tell us about your home life? Where you live? Family? Pets?

My home life is simple, at a slow pace. I live in the rural area of a small east Texas town, the land I grew up on. My husband and I are content and happy with what God has provided for us. The town is small enough that most people know each other. I still have a little struggle fitting in the culture. I was gone from the town for 40 years. I have no regrets coming back to the town. This is where I am supposed to be at this phase of my life. I live next door to my younger brother and his family, in fact all family live on our road. My older brother lives with us, he is recovering from a heart attack. It gets interesting sometimes living with two men. My husband and I are members of a local church, my husband is a deacon, and I am the Bible teacher in our women mission ministry. One of the things I love to do is going fishing; it is very relaxing and therapeutic. We have no pets.

Can you tell us a little about your childhood?

I am the oldest of four kids, one sister and two brothers. My sister and I are the older ones. I had the bulk of the responsibilities at home growing up. I was a quiet kid with deep thoughts. I asked questions, I did a lot of reasoning in my mind. The why’s, how’s, where’s and when’s. I wanted to know why I am here on earth. Now that I am here what is my purpose? Where do I go from here? We lived on the land my parents bought, we had a vegetable garden, dad raised pigs, we had chickens, and my dad and brothers would go hunting. We never went hungry. We had a rustic life. No running water, no bathroom, and no telephone. I think growing up I wanted more in life than what I was experiencing and seeing. I saw no contentment or happy people. I witness changes when alcohol was in the mist, which was an illusion of contentment or happiness. I didn’t want that. I played sports in school and in the community, I enjoyed that. I excelled in school and in sports. I didn’t feel loved growing up, but I know I was. I was interested in Jesus Christ, my grandfather introduced me to Jesus. I am so grateful he did. I think my life would be different, if I hadn’t met Jesus. When I graduate high school I left home and went to a neighboring city. At 20 years old I left the state of Texas. I moved to Oregon/Washington State.

Where’s your favorite place to write at home?

My favorite place to write is at my dining room table.

What do you do to get away from it all?

I go fishing or I go to one of my timeshare resorts.

What is the most frustrating part of being an author?

The most frustrating part is to articulate to the reader what I am trying say, and that my words come alive to the reader, so that the reader can identify or understand what I am saying. I want to hold the interest of the reader to the end. Promoting the book to the audience can be frustrating.

What is the most rewarding?

The most rewarding is when I get positive feed-back from the reader, and they state that the book added to their life. That makes it all worth the laboring for over 20 years.

If you had one wish, what would that be?

I would like the book to be one of the 10 best sellers; with that being accomplished a lot of reader will realize that they need a savior.

Your book has been awarded a Pulitzer. Who would you thank?

I would thank God. Apart from him I am nothing, and I can’t do anything without him. God is the vine, and I am the branch.

Thank you so much for this interview, Doe Running Deer. Do you have any final words?

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to answer your questions.
