Mike Hartner Mike Hartner is a father, son, author, patriot, geek (ret), and husband. His love of all things genealogical led him to writing, and writing has now led him to fiction and a large epic saga.

He lives in Vancouver, BC with his wife and son.

His latest book is the historical romance, I, Walter.

Q: Can you tell us why you wrote your book?

To learn about myself and others.

I, Walter Q: Which part of the book was the hardest to write?

The ending

Q: Does your book have an underlying message that readers should know about?  

Just that each person is unique and that character matters more than appearance

Q: Do you remember when the writing bug hit?

Around 2000 when I was researching my family genealogy

Q: Besides books, what else do you write?  Do you write for publications?

No. Just books.

Q: Do you have a writing tip you’d like to share?

Be true to yourself.

Q:  Would you like to tell us about your home life?  Where you live?  Family?  Pets?

I’m married, with a 12 yr old child, and two seniors. No other pets. Vancouver, BC is beautiful

Q:  Can you tell us a little about your childhood?

I grew up the oldest of four children in the midwest on both sides of the Canadian/US border.

Q: Where’s your favorite place to write at home?

Bedroom

Q: What do you do to get away from it all?

Put headphones on, listen to classical music and write.

Q: What was the first thing you did as far as promoting your book?

KDP select, followed by Twitter and Facebook

Q: Are you familiar with the social networks and do you actively participate?

Actively in Twitter and facebook

Q: How do you think book promotion has changed over the years?

Online book promotion, including the blog tours that are coming up is totally diffferent than yesteryear’s dog and pony shows to Appearances.

Q: What is the most frustrating part of being an author? 

Marketing

Q: What is the most rewarding?

Writing, and receiving feedback

Q: How do you think book publishing has changed over the years?

It’s changed so much that I’m self-pubbed and it’s not a dirty phrase any more.

Q: If you had one wish, what would that be?

For everyone around me to have health and success, no matter what their definition of success is.

Q: If you could be anywhere in the world other than where you are right now, where would that place be?

Maui.  Beautiful place, enriches my life and my writing.

Q: Your book has just been awarded a Pulitzer.  Who would you thank?

First, I would thank my family for their support. Then, I would thank my editor, Robert L. Bacon.  Rob is a very successful author who edits and mentors to give back to the writing community.  It is his influence that is largely responsible for the growth in my writing over the past three years.  To Brian Schwartz and his artist for creating the cover page, and for all the formatting necessary. And to the readers, who continually amaze me by reading and reviewing what I have written.  Thank you all.
