The Interview

Thank you for this interview, Steven Manchester. Do you remember writing stories as a child or did the writing bug come later? Do you remember your first published piece?

A: I definitely tinkered with words when I was young, but it was actually my grandfather who inspired me to write. He was the greatest storyteller, but never captured any of it on paper. Even when I was young, I though it was a waste. In the fourth grade, our teacher, Mrs. Parsons published a grade-school anthology that included two of my poems.

As an adult, I suppose I discovered the writing world by accident – or perhaps it discovered me. I’d just returned home from Operation Desert Storm, and was working as a prison investigator in Massachusetts. Needless to say, there was great negativity in my life at that time. I decided to return to college to finish my degree in Criminal Justice. During one of the classes, the professor talked about police work but nothing else. I finally raised my hand and asked, “The criminal justice system is vast. What about the courts, probation, parole – corrections?” He smiled and told me to see him after class. I thought I’d finally done it! In his office, he explained, “There’s no written material out there on corrections or prisons, except from the slanted perspective of inmates.” He smiled again and dropped the bomb. “If you’re so smart,” he said, “why don’t you write it?” Nine months later, I dropped the first draft of 6-5; A Different Shade of Blue on his desk. From then on, I was hooked. I was a writer.

What do you consider as the most frustrating side of becoming a published author and what has been the most rewarding?

A: The greatest challenge for me has been time. First and foremost, I am a dad and my children come first. After that, there are other responsibilities that need my attention. Yet, my passion to write has constantly gnawed at my soul. To overcome the obstacle of time, I made writing a priority over watching TV and sometimes even sleeping. Once my family is taken care of and the world closes its eyes, I’m up for a few more hours each day – chasing my dreams on paper.

As far as being published, I’ve endured my fair share of rejection (years of it), but I’ve also learned the value of perseverance and believing in your work to the point that you would never quit.

Each time one of my works is published, I am overjoyed.

Are you married or single and how do you combine the writing life with home life? Do you have support?

A: I have a beautiful wife—Paula. She is very supportive and understands that I live in two worlds (mentally) whenever I’m writing. Again, I do everything I can to put the family comes first. Still, I’m sure there are times when the two worlds collide.

The first thing I do when I finish a manuscript is to take my wife out to dinner—in gratitude for her support.

What do you like to do for fun when you’re not writing? Where do you like to vacation? Can you tell us briefly about this?

A: Spending time with my children is my greatest joy. I also love to be with family and friends. For me, the ideal vacations take place on or near a beach—preferably on Martha’s Vinyard.

If you could be anywhere in the world for one hour right now, where would that place be and why?

A: London—to shake one athlete’s hand after the next. The determination and work that goes into earning those medals inspires me.

Who is your biggest fan?

A: My children and wife.

Where’s your favorite place to write at home?

A: Oddly enough—our dining room at night (no distractions).

Do you have any pets?

A: A full-grown dog that weighs nearly four pounds. She’s my daughter’s teacup poodle named Sophie. Very easy to love, but she’s not your typical dog; she’s more like having a fully clothed guinea pig running around.

Tell us a secret no one else knows.

A: Sorry—can’t. There’s a reason no one knows.

What’s on your to do list today?

A: Get milk and bread; take my daughter to dance class and do some writing—once the world goes to sleep.

Now I’ve got a couple of fun questions for you. If Tom Hanks, in the movie Cast Away, unearthed a copy of your book, how would that help him find a way off the island?

A: My hope is that he would love the book so much that he’d decide to stay and read it over-and-over; there are too many distractions in the world today. And by reading the book, his mind would be transported into the world I’ve created within its pages.

You just got word that your book has received the 2012 NY Times Bestselling Book Award and you have to attend the ceremony to give an acceptance speech. Anyone who’s anyone will be there and it’s your shot for stardom. What would you say and who would you thank?

A: Who wouldn’t I thank? I think about all the people who have supported my journey (my dream) through the years and the list has grown quite long. My greatest message, however, would be directed toward my children. Quite simply: Dreams do come true—but they are not given; they are fought for with every cell of your being.

I understand that you are touring with Pump Up Your Book Promotion in (August – October) via a virtual book tour. Can you tell us all why you chose a virtual book tour to promote your book online?

A: This is the wave of the future. Readers are connecting online and discovering their favorite authors there. I am grateful for any opportunity to connect with my readers.

Thank you for this interview, Steve. Good luck on your virtual book tour!

A: Thank you. I appreciate your time!
