Pump Up Your Book Chats with Medical Thriller Author Rudy A. Mazzocchi

Rudy Mazzochi Rudy A. Mazzocchi is best known as a medical device and biotechnology entrepreneur, inventor, and angel investor, with a history of starting new technology ventures throughout the U.S. and Europe. He’s been privileged to have the opportunity to see the newest innovations in healthcare and work with some of the most brilliant researchers, scientists and physicians in the industry.

Authoring more than 50 patents, he has helped pioneer new companies involved in cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, neurosurgery and even embryonic stem-cell development. Through these efforts, he has become the recipient of many technology and business awards, including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Healthcare and the Businessman of the Year Award.

Combining these experiences and opportunities, with thousands of hours of travel and long evenings in hotel rooms, he found the initiative to start writing a collection of medical thrillers based on true events, the first of which is entitled EQUITY of EVIL.

ABOUT EQUITY OF EVIL

Equity of Evil A Venture Capital Fund makes a risky investment to start a challenging new business that appears capable of reaching profitabililty with modest capital requirements. The real challenge: optimizing one of the most frequently performed surgical procedure in the World — Abortion.

Founding Partner, Roman Citrano, a successful entrepreneur turned venture capitalist, soon struggles with what he believes is his choice to establish the controversial new company. He soon realizes that he and others are but pawns on a massive, ugly chessboard being manipulated to benefit a far larger, illicit market in human organs for transplantation. Unknowingly, prime, hyper-enriched organs are spawned from the aborted fetuses and grown like hydroponic vegetables.

An unfolding world of deceit, rape, human trafficking and assassination becomes deeply personal as Roman’s sole love interest secretly uses one of his new abortion services to terminate her untimely pregnancy. When she disappears, his frantic search becomes a hellish nightmare that grows worse by the hour.

Based on true events, this bold novel involves some of the world’s oldest, most emotional and controversial issues. At the core of each matter is man’s predisposition to control and take ownership of the human spirit for the sake of profit and person gain… such is the dark and brutal new world where life becomes the equity of evil.

Q: Thank you for stopping by, Rudy!   I’m always curious to find out the reason why authors write their books.  What’s your story?

My career has allowed me to observe the creation of new innovative medical technologies years before they are ever commercialized. Most are revolutionary and require physicians to re-think how they perform a procedure or treat a patient. Many of them challenge our premise of “man-playing-god”, the ethical and moral issues surrounding the manipulation of life. Pretty deep stuff, but this is why the reality of my world became more exciting than those stories I found in the pages of other novels. So I decided to try and write my own. Even the process of writing tales that related to such game-changing technologies was more compelling than reading store-bought science fiction.

Q: For some authors, it’s hard to write that first word.  For others, it’s intricate parts inside the book that is the trickiest.  And for some, it’s hard to know when to end the book.  Which part of the book was the hardest to write for you?

It was really difficult to write about the rape scene that occurs in a seedy part of East Los Angeles, but the storyline required it. The scene had to interrupt the notion that things were progressing as “business as usual” and to set off the readers on a rollercoaster ride that doesn’t end until the last scene of the book. The brutality of the scene couldn’t be sugar-coated — it needed to be bold and direct, and it was tough to work through it.

Q: Does your book have an underlying message that readers should know about?

Yes! There are several new scientific innovations and breakthroughs that will impact our lives in the near future, and many more that will affect the next generation. We will have no choice about their existence… they’ll be here if we like it or not. Therefore, we all need to be aware of them and start to think about how society is going to accept and manage them. Equity of Evil touches on many of these medical and scientific innovations that are on the cusp of shaking up public and political views in the major nations of the world. I’m hopeful that this novel (and those underway) will help open up people’s willingness to process such new revelations that will surely disrupt our current moral and ethical opinions.

Q: Besides books, what else do you write?  Do you write for publications?

This is my real first attempt at fiction. I’ve authored dozens of Business Plans, which might be fair to say that a couple Venture Capitalists thought a few of them were fiction! I have also authored or co-authored a couple dozen patent applications – which requires the “telling of a story”, as well as about a handful of medical publications. This is the first time I’ve tried to market something to the general public.

Q: Do you have a writing tip you’d like to share?

As an untrained author, you’re probably asking the wrong guy, but… my best advice is to “just write”. Sit down and start writing and simply put yourself into the story. I personally start running this little movie clip inside my head and let the characters and scenes develop seconds before I commit them to paper. The real work is in the editing… let that come later. For now, just write!

Q: What was the first thing you did as far as promoting your book?

Created a website that continues to grow: www.rudymazzocchi.com . I then engaged this wonderful promotional company called Pump Up Your Book. They’ve been doing a fabulous job of building a Virtual Book Tour, something which I never knew even existed!

Q: Are you familiar with the social networks and do you actively participate?

I’m “old-school” and haven’t been a fan of social networks, but finally broke down to create an Author’s Page on Facebook. I’m now twittering, blogging, and doing promo blasts on LinkedIN. I’m still not sure how it works, but doing the best I can!

Q: What is the most frustrating part of being an author?

Since I’m new to this industry, I found everything to be frustrating. The larger publishing houses wouldn’t even consider reading my manuscript because I wasn’t represented by an agent. The top literary agencies then told me that they weren’t interested in representing me because I was a “first time author”… again without even reading my manuscript. Once I finally convinced an Agency to represent me, I was told the theme of my book was too controversial and too risky to promote on behalf of an author without any brand recognition. Meanwhile, everywhere I turned, people were telling me to not waste my time and money on self-publishing.

Q: What is the most rewarding?

That my debut novel is now published and available to the public regardless of the hundreds of rejected query letters by publishers, agencies and editors. I now have the confidence and courage to keep writing.

Q: If you could be anywhere in the world other than where you are right now, where would that place be?

Tough question. I’ve traveled to many beautiful places in this world only to realize that it’s not about the place, but rather the people and who you’re sharing that place with. All that said… probably somewhere along the Italian Riviera.

Q: Your book has just been awarded a Pulitzer. Who would you thank?

First, my wife, kids and co-workers for allowing me to use up most of my personal down-time to write. Secondly, my Agent (Erica at Trident Media Group), Publisher (Lida at Twilight Times Books) and Publicists (Dorothy at Pump Up Your Book), all for having the faith to support this bold new novel.

Q: Thank you so much for this interview, Rudy.  Do you have any final words?

Thank you… and don’t forget to upload EQUITY of EVIL at Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble. (Never stop promoting!)
