About The Door to Far-Myst

The Door to Far Myst Can a boy who has never even heard of the word “imagination” save a magical world from an evil force using his own imagination?

Rupert Dullz isn’t very happy. His grandmother’s coffus is getting worse, school is boring and there’s nothing to do on his days off but rake up endless piles of leaves. Everything in Graysland is, well, gray, and every day is just like the one before it, and the one before that. That is, until a strangely dressed man named Pie O’Sky swoops out of nowhere in his multicolored bagoon and offers a special reward to whoever can open his mysterious door. When Rupert succeeds, he’s thrilled when Pie O’Sky carries him beyond it to the brilliantly colored land of Far-Myst. Adventure calls, and Rupert discovers a wonderful world full of something he’s never heard of before–imagination. But Far-Myst is in danger, and it may be that only Rupert has the power to save it. Is he the one whose imagination is powerful enough to stop the evil that is destroying the beautiful world beyond the door?

Thank you for this interview, Mike.  I’d like to start off by having you tell us more about your writing life.  Where did you get your start?

Mike: My love of storytelling goes back to listening to my Dad read bedtime stories to us. I loved the whimsy and silly wordplay of Dr. Seuess. When I was five I attempted my first book called “The Funny Book of the Body” a sort of satirical anatomy text. I showed my father the first few pages and rather than just say “Very good, Mike. Nice job” he gave me constructive criticism and treated my writing seriously. I have been writing every since.

Is writing something you’ve always wanted to do?

Mike: Yes. It gives me great joy.

Based in New York, that must be an exciting place for authors.  Can you tell us what opportunities there are in that beautiful city of lights to talk about your book and what have you done to promote your books there?

Mike: Yeah NYC is in my blood and a big part of who I am. For a small press author like myself I have to employ many of the same promo methods that folks from Montana or Vermont would have to – mostly internet marketing. But there are schools and some small bookshops that are good “signing” locations.  I recently did a signing of Rupert at a street fair in front of the Cat Adoption Center where I volunteer. A nice way to meet people.

Are there any other writers in your family?

Mike: Yes. My dad has always written and writes a weekly newsletter for his church. My uncle, who has also been great at encouraging my writing, has published about a dozen books.

Do you have any mentors?

Mike: Not really. There are people who are my “best fans” like my wife, dad, uncle and some friends. Their love and support is very helpful in keeping me writing. If there are any mentors out there looking for a “mentee” just contact me!

Is writing middle grade fantasy a dream of yours or did you just happen to fall into it?

Mike: I love writing for this genre. It allows my wild imagination to go nuts but also keeps the reigns on cynicism. It keeps my generally optimistic worldview sparkling.

What’s your favorite part of the book?

Mike: Wow – there are so many. There is an exciting scene where Rupert and Dream Weaver are exploring these great underground “runs”–great hollow roots of the Water Fall Pines. Strange creatures roam these runs as does great washes of water. Without giving it away–it becomes a tense and exciting moment in the story.

What makes your main character, Rupert Starbright, so special?

Mike: his compassion. Rupert has a great heart. I wanted a main character who was not mean spirited or dark. We can learn much from young Rupert Starbright.

If you could wear Rupert’s shoes for one day, where would those shoes take you?

Mike: I would instantly go to THE GARDEN OF DREAMS. I have a rooftop garden and love to grow all kinds of plants and flowers but especially chili peppers. I have always been a gardener and get my green thumb from my mom. I would LOVE to see the Juggling Geraniums and Pepper Poet plants!

I’d like to talk about your beautiful cover.  Did you have any input on its design?

Mike: I did fill out a standard author cover form. It was not needed as eight-time Hugo winner Brad Foster came up with a cover that blew me sideways. I LOVE the cover and never get bored looking at it. It PERFECTLY captures the feel of Book One of “The Adventures of Rupert Starbright.” I cannot wait to see what he does for Book Two!

What genre have you not written that you would like to write?

Mike: A comedy thriller. I want people laughing AND turning pages. I have a few ideas and one day will tackle it.

You are on a virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book this month.  What made you decide to add a virtual book tour to your book campaign?

Mike: It seemed like the perfect way to get my book out there to the internet (and thus the real world) community. I have heard good things about these tours and I look forward to it!

Finally, if you had one wish, what would that be?

Mike: Well since we are discussing books my wish is that  Rupert Starbright becomes loved by an audience. I had so much fun writing the books and hope people have just half as much fun reading them!

Thank you so much for this interview, Mike.  Do you have any final words?

Mike: If you are disappointed that the great Harry Potter has retired do not fret! Give Rupert Starbright a chance. I think you will fall in love with him, his friends and his adventures!
