About The Grym Brothers Series

TWO AND A HALF DEAD MEN

Two and a Half Dead Men People die every day.

But not all of the souls can or want to move onto the afterlife.

That’s where the brothers Thane and Mort Grym come in.

Thane and Mort are bounty hunters for dead souls. They inherited the job from their father and they’re two of the best in town.

But when there’s a double homicide at the Kirkland Motel the Grym brothers end up with more than they bargained for. In a world without vampires, zombies or the undead, one of their bounties might not be as dead as he’s supposed to be.

BOOK EXCERPT:

“What the hell?” the guy on the floor says, appropriately freaking out.

“I’m Thane,” the shorter man with the lighter, closely cropped hair says. He points to the guy standing next to him. “This is my brother Mort. Our last name is Grym. It’s funny, you won’t get it right away, but you will in a minute.”

“And you’re dead,” Mort points to the man on the floor impatiently.

Thane shakes his head. “Geez, Mort.”

Mort’s the younger of the two. He stands about two inches taller. He keeps his dark hair long and unruly, slicked back with oil and grease. He’s dressed in a pair of ratty jeans and a stained t-shirt. The brown overcoat that looks like it had been to Hell and back originally belonged to their father, with whom he shares the same dark brown eyes.

“What?” He holds up his wrist to show Thane the watch. “Do you see what time it is?”

Thane looks at the face of the watch and then at Mort. “Yeah. It’s a quarter past three.”

Mort’s face scrunches up. He checks the watch himself, tapping the faceplate with his other hand. He looks out the window as though to confirm it. It’s dark out and the moon is starting to rise.

“That’s not right,” he says.

“I know,” Thane replies. He stands straight, compared to his brother’s slouched posture. His clothes are clean and his jacket is stain free. He’s got his mother’s light blue eyes. “That watch hasn’t been able to tell the correct time ever since you got it.”

“It was Dad’s watch,” he says, like that was supposed to kill the argument.

“Which explains why he was always late.”

“Whatever,” he runs a hand through his dirty hair. “There’s a fight on in an hour. I don’t know want to miss it.”

“Of course,” Thane mutters.

“What?” Mort asks.

“Nothing,” Thane says aloud.

“Excuse me, but what the hell?” the guy on the floor asks again.

The brothers give the man on the floor their attention.

“You’re dead,” Mort repeats. “D-E-A-D,” and he tears off a bite from his foot long sandwich he had insisted on bringing up with him.

THE DEAD COUPLE

The Dead Couple Jack and Cindy were a happily married couple. She was an elementary school teacher. He was an aspiring children’s book author. They had the perfect life together, until the day they decided to kill themselves.

Suicides, by their very nature, tend to head directly into the afterlife.

Jack and Cindy’s souls never arrived.

Grim Reapers are real. They are governed by the Council of Reapers. Reapers are responsible for the capture and containment of dead souls that refuse to or cannot move on to the afterlife.

Thane and Mort Grym are two such reapers.

BOOK EXCERPT:

It’s two in the afternoon. The Grym brothers have been sitting in this pastel waiting room for the better part of forty minutes. There’s a black man across from them that keeps giving them a suspicious look, like they were going to jump up and steal his cane.

“So, you’re trapped on an island,” Mort starts again. He pauses and sneaks a glance at his brother.

“I’m not saying a thing,” Thane comments, watching him out of the corner of his eye.

“I just don’t want to get interrupted again,” Mort explains.

“And yet, here you are, interrupting yourself,” Thane points out.

Mort turns back to the magazine. “You’re trapped on an island and you’re allowed three things: one luxury item, one necessity item and one person,” he looks at his brother.

Thane takes a sip from his takeout cup, watching as two female assistants come back from their lunch break. They’re giggling about some silly story. They step through the door next to the reception window.

“Well?” Mort prompts.

“Well what?” Thane asks. “You didn’t ask a question.”

“It was a implied,” Mort says.

“Implied my ass.”

Mort sighs loudly. “Okay. Fine. You’re stranded on an island-”

“I’m pretty sure you can stop repeating the concept,” Thane interrupts. “I’ve got it by now.”

“I wasn’t sure,” Mort says. “Honestly, you seem like you’re more interested in the strangers walking around here than talking.”

“Yeah, sorry about that,” Thane says. “I shouldn’t let work come between us.”

“How would Stacy feel about you looking at all these women?” Mort asks.

“All what women?” Thane looks at him. “In the last forty minutes those were the first two women we’ve seen,” he points to where the assistants had gone.

“I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t be cool with you keeping count.”

Thane just looks at his brother for a second.

“Do you have any idea what we’re doing here?” he asks.

“Wasting my time?” Mort suggests.

Thane reaches over and flicks his brother’s ear.

“Ow,” Mort holds a hand against his bruised ear.

“A dying man asked us to find his daughter,” Thane says.

“Because you,” Mort pokes his brother in the chest, “asked him if there was anything we could do before he shuffled free of this mortal coil. So, as far as last requests go, doesn’t hold a lot of weight when you go fishing for one.”

BETTER OFF DEAD

Better Off Dead They say dead men tell no tales, but that’s just because they’ve never worked as a Grim Reaper.

Grim Reapers are real. They are governed by the Council of Reapers. Reapers are responsible for the capture and containment of dead souls that refuse to or cannot move on to the afterlife.

Lori Standford’s mother died six months ago. Now she’s back, haunting Lori out of her home. Lori turns to her close friend, Emma Grym, mother of Thane and Mort Grym, for help.

Now Thane and Mort find themselves embroiled in a mystery of dead men that stretches all the way to the top.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Mason Funeral Home, family owned and operated, is located two blocks off Sanderson Ave, past the Adult Video and the child daycare place. It’s a brickwork building that’s been around for the last twenty-five years. The shrubs out front are overgrown and there’s bougainvillea vines stretching out along both sides of the building.

In the hallway of the funeral home two young men, brothers, stand against the dull gray wall, trying to look inconspicuous among the sea of gray hair.

The one on the left is the older of the two. His hair is light brown and closely cropped. He’s got a five o’clock shadow and his mother’s light blue eyes. Dressed in a conservative, but casual, black suit he looks like a business executive just off the clock. His hands are shoved casually into his pants pockets as he leans against the wall, watching the steady stream of people enter the funeral home.

The one on the right wiggles his pinky in his left ear, like he’s digging for gold. He’s got greasy black hair that’s been in need of a cut for almost six months. He stands about two inches taller than his brother. His eyes are dark brown and there are purple bruises, about three weeks old, covering his face. He’s dressed in a pair of mostly clean jeans and a yellow t-shirt with a smiley face plastered over it. The brown overcoat he’s wearing looks like it’s been run over by a succession of oversized dump trucks.

Their names are Thane and Mort Grym. They’re freelance grim reapers and, strangely enough, they’re not at the Mason Funeral Home looking for work.
