About Bloodmaiden

Bloodmaiden Zale. Gauthier. Varden. These three dynasties…

“They all sound like something out of an ancient oriental myth or fairy tale. The concept of humans and dragons helping and living in harmony with one another, without fear. To me, that’s exactly what they are. A distant dream only read of, whispered secretly, quietly yearned for.

“For, you see, I am the new Quelda of Tynan.”

These words echo the mystery, horror, and romance found within Schulze’s fantasy novel. Along with her new husband, Chalom, Crislin must choose to embrace cruel tradition, run from it, or stand against it. The young couple’s only hope is to rally the help of the three peaceful dragon dynasties of Sulaimon-but tradition is not on their side, even outside the realm of Tynan. The dragons outside Tynan’s borders have been rumored as too stubborn and proud to believe their Tynanian brothers would commit such horrors as inflicted upon the Quelda. Gaining their aid is not a likely hope. Yet, any hope at all is valued in Tynan.

If they are to stand a chance of bringing cruel tradition to a permanent end, Crisilin and Chalom must brave the constant, consuming blizzards of the Ever-white. They must brave the three dynasties and the challenges awaiting there. Together, they must convince the dragon emperors to allow them access to the shrines which house the sacred Aria – protective strands of music which may be able to disperse the evil from Tynan and unite the four dynasties of Sulaimon as a whole once again. Their only aid stems from a sprite whose moods are as unstable as her magic, a young minstrel, and a mysterious fox. Despite the odds, such plans are daring, dangerous, unprecedented, but fully possible – if they can escape the Wall first.

I lay in Chalom’s arms. He drifts to sleep holding me close.

I waver in and out of uneasy fits of slumber. I can’t shake them
from my mind – flashes of blood, ghost-like screams of
unimaginable torture, dragons mercilessly ripping the innocent
bodies to shreds. I wish I hadn’t watched or listened, rendered
too stunned to look away. I would prefer suddenly going blind
and deaf and wish my mind could turn numb to their pain –
unless I might witness the dragon’s own pain, the pain I so
strongly desire to see inflicted upon them. Over fifty years of
torture catapulted right back at them. Only, if I have my way,
they won’t be able to die so quickly. Make them endure all the
suffering of each Quelda who has passed before…

Perhaps such violent thoughts are no better than their own.

Perhaps I think they should offer some comfort in this torture
chamber called a bedroom, but nothing helps. I look to the
walls and see only the glowing red jewels crowning the
Quelda’s head in a skewed wreath, her snowy skin adorned with
grotesquely shaped, crimson gems. I cannot imagine the
dragon’s torture, not here. And if I close my eyes, it is the same.
There is only her, her probing eyes as she plunges into that bath
of rubies…

As I slip into yet another uneasy sleep, her eyes glitter,
vividly staring straight at me and pleading with intense pain. As
if my being the next Quelda somehow gives me a larger power
than she herself bore in her own short reign. As if I can
somehow stop the dragons and spare her. Then, the dragon
hovering over her swipes his long, gleaming claws towards her
neck –

The vision changes in a flash, so quickly my body flinches.

I lie very still as if the approaching dreams want me to focus
solely on them.

And the visions come.

At first, I see myself racing through the fields of the
mountains, twisting between rocky paths with my closest
friends, laughing, skipping, chasing, and tagging each other.
Chalom isn’t there, but all is peaceful. I am with my friends. I
am a child again.

Then I see myself in Chalom’s arms as if my spirit travels
outside my body to hover over my sleeping self. The bed
gradually fades until we lie on the softest, greenest grass. Or so
it looks, but try as I might, I cannot reach out to touch it. My
dream self, the one lying in Chalom’s arms, looks up at me
gravely then, eyes flashing sharply, determinedly, pleading to
share some message. What ignites such intense passion? As her
eyes scroll to the side, I follow her gaze.

I take in a small gasp and stare. A third me runs laughing
between tall, thin, brightly green fields illuminated with
heavenly sunlight. A salty – sweet breeze wafts dreamily. My
laugh dances lightly, care-free, as in the vision of my
childhood. And behind me, laughing too, is a small child. She
grasps at the folds of my white, fairy-like gown. I turn,
scooping her up, holding her close, twirling her around then
hugging her again, pressing her cheek against mine –

The child looks at me.

Here’s what critics are saying about Bloodmaiden!

“For one so young, only 22, Schulze has managed to fashion a dazzling fantasy full of both good and evil, humor and sadness, action and adventure. The characters may not have been quite as developed as they could have been but Bloodmaiden is more than worth people’s time. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to everyone. I feel this is a book that would easily appeal to middle graders, young adults, and adults. Bloodmaiden should not be overlooked.”

— The Book Pixie

“Overall Bloodmaiden is a very solid and well-written story! I haven’t even begun to delve into the delicious dragon-fueled dynasties, or any of the other epic parts of the storyline. I’ll leave that up to you to discover as you dive into this beautifully written book. I happily recommend this book to all fantasy lovers out there! Enjoy!”

— Hopeless Bibliophile

“I really loved this book, and feel it is a very special story.  It is a must read for fantasy lovers and also lover of sweet romances.”

— The Book Buff

“I give Bloodmaiden a very strong 4 out of 5, and I’d highly recommend it to YA fans of fantasy and Christian fiction (the morals are very strong). Those who enjoy Eragon and The Sword of Truth series will likely truly enjoy Bloodmaiden.”

“Doing so might give away a little too much of what exactly is happening in Bloodmaiden. However, I will say this: the book is not about vampires. I get that a lot. If readers want vampires, please check out Golden Healer, Dark Enchantress.”

“One question I am often asked is how Bloodmaiden came into existence. One question I would like to answer today is: How did the four dynasties of Sulaimon come into existence?”

Interviewed at Review From Here

“I am, of course, very passionate about my writing. Have been even as a small kid, determined that someday, my stories would be enjoyed by readers throughout the world, giving them the same joy I had in creating them. Being a little older, I also wish to inspire people with my books. Inspire them to follow their own dreams. And, for my more Christian themed books, to inspire and encourage both Christians and non-Christians alike. Everyone can take away something from my books, I believe, whether on just an emotional or even spiritual level.”

“Being a huge fan of the fantasy genre, this one was such a wonderful way to get lost in a land of magic once again and see how pride, greed and arrogance can ruin things until love and harmony are once more restored along Usamah’s blessings to reign once more. Caught in a time period much like Narnia, this one will delight and entertain the reader in a magical way. I highly recommend this book to those of you looking to get lost in beautiful, fictional place and rate this one a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.”
