Q: Can you tell us why you wrote your book?

I had a story that needed to be documented.  I am blessed with the unusual ability to see spirits of the dead. My book is based on events from my own life.  Truth is stranger than fiction. Many of the paranormal experiences described in my book actually happened.  People continue to be fascinated by a good ghost story.  What better than one based on actual events and not merely a product of the author’s imagination.

Sarah They're Coming for You

Q: Which part of the book was the hardest to write?

I was in tears writing the end of the final chapter.  As an author, you become one with your novel, and it was sad having to say good bye to the world and the characters I had created within the pages of the novel. But the story had reached its natural conclusion, and after all the loose ends had been tied up, it was time to write the last sentence and move on.

Q: Does your book have an underlying message that readers should know about?

My underlying message is that ghosts are real! People who do not have the ability to see spirits of the departed tend to be skeptical about the afterlife. There are ghosts all around us, trying to make contact. The spirit realm is very real and as tangible and real as the physical world.

Q:  Would you like to tell us about your home life?  Where you live?  Family?  Pets?

My husband and I live in a lovely suburban town in south Florida.  We have an average ranch style house with some amazing grounds, which sold us on the place.  We have an acre of land which backs up to a creek, and a wooded lot resembling a park, with some really old trees.  Living in south Florida we of course have a swimming pool, and for our four rescued dogs, a fenced in backyard and a doggie door for their convenience.

Q: Where’s your favorite place to write at home?

My favorite place to write is in our home office. I love the view from that room. It overlooks the front porch, with a weathered rocking chair, handmade wheel barrel, and other antique country knick knacks. Beyond the house visible from my vantage point sitting behind my wood plank desk I look out to beautiful woods.

Q: What do you do to get away from it all?

My retreat is the screened patio in the back of our house.  Overlooking the pool and the creek, it is decorated with vintage white wicker furniture.  Hanging from the bead board ceiling are antique railroad lanterns and a pair of melodic wind chimes.

Sarah They're Coming For You Q: Are you familiar with the social networks and do you actively participate?

I am somewhat familiar with them, and no, I do not actively participate.  I carry a full course load as a college professor, and do not have the luxury of time to devote to the sites. Whatever free time I do have is spent grading papers and preparing lectures. I have a web site and am on Facebook that is pretty much the extent of my participation.

Q: What is the most frustrating part of being an author?

The enormous amount of time and energy needed to market your published book.  I have no business sense at all, and am pretty much lost navigating the waters. Had I known that getting published was just the beginning of the author process, and the marketing was so much of the author’s responsibility, I don’t know if I would have written my novel.

Q: If you had one wish, what would that be?

That wish would be there would be an end to animal cruelty.  I am such a dog lover.  We adopted all our babies from a high kill shelter. I am a huge supporter of the ASPCA.  It makes me physically sick to hear the stories of animal abuse.

Q: If you could be anywhere in the world other than where you are right now, where would that place be?

I would like to be in Woodstock, New York. My husband was fortunate to have grown up one town over in Hurley.  Woodstock is a Catskill Mountain town with tons of charm and ambiance. May I quote Joni Mitchell referring to the music festival – “Got to get back to the land and set my soul free.” Maybe I’m just an old hippie trying to get back to 1969!

Q: Thank you so much for this interview, Susan.  Do you have any final words?

My book can be purchased at Amazon and Wildchildpublishing.com.
